Springfield Rita's donates to youth org; ice cream coming to Rountree

This week in Springfield-area restaurant news: An Italian ice shop donates proceeds from its grand opening and an ice cream shop prepares to open in Rountree.

During its grand opening Sept. 29, Springfield's first Rita's pledged to donate 20% of sales to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks. Sauce Container With Lid

In addition to the percentage of sales, local franchisee Justine Postorino donated an additional amount, bringing the total donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters up to $1,000, according to a press release.

Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard is located at 2100 W. Republic Road, Suite 112. It's open from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Sleepy Opossum Cafe owner Dani Hunnell is aiming for a Nov. 4 "slooooow" open for a new ice cream shop, according to a Facebook post. Box Turtle Creamery will feature "traditional and local unique flavors" of ice cream at 1458 E. Cherry St.

Sleepy Opossum, which offers baked goods and breakfast foods from inside The Royal Music Hall, will still continue to operate, according to Hunnell's post.
